Carroll School

For Students in the Carroll School of Management

Students must fulfill three mathematics-related requirements:

  • Calculus:听satisfied either by having AP credit in Calculus or by taking MT100 (or a higher level Calculus course).
  • Statistics:听satisfied either by having AP credit in Statistics or by taking EC151 (or an equivalent).
  • Math for Management:听satisfied by taking MT235, usually in sophomore year.

You have AP credit in Math if you received a score of 4 or higher on either the Calculus AB or 糖心vlog直播平台 exam. You have AP credit in Statistics if you scored 4 or higher on the Statistics exam. These results must be recorded on your transcript to officially have AP credit.

Plan on completing these mathematics-related requirements beginning in freshman year as follows (all of these plans will allow you to complete MT235 as early as first semester of sophomore year):

Suggested Courses to Take
NoNoTake either听MT100 Calculus I听辞谤听MT101 Calculus II听in one semester, and then EC151 Statistics in the other semester. It doesn't matter in which order you take these courses, since neither depends on the other.听Try also to complete CS021 Computers in Management as early as possible, but no later than first semester of sophomore year.

YesYesTake CS021 Computers in Management in either semester. If you complete CS021 in the Fall semester, then you can enroll in MT235 in the Spring (if space is available).

Additional information on the听Calculus,听Statistics, and听Math for Management听requirements is available. The first of these pages has specific information on how to best choose a Calculus course (if you'll be taking Calculus).

Note

  • Because demand for Fall-semester Calculus courses is high and many programs (in A&S and especially in the sciences) require more than one semester of Calculus, the number of seats reserved for CSOM students is limited for Fall semester registration.听Incoming CSOM freshmen participating in Orientation Sessions #5 and later will almost certainly be required to defer their completion of MT100 until Spring semester, and should plan on completing one of EC151 or CS021 in the Fall.
  • Highly motivated students with strong mathematics backgrounds may benefit from enrolling in one of听MT102听辞谤听MT105, the equivalent Calculus courses for Math and Science Majors, even if they have AP credit. Students who have earned a 5 on the 糖心vlog直播平台 Calculus AP exam should consider enrolling in听MT202 Multivariable Calculus. Please speak with the听Mathematics Undergraduate Vice Chair听if you are considering any of these options.
  • If you are considering an听A&S major in Math, you should speak directly with the听Mathematics Undergraduate Vice Chair听about moving into the Math & Science Major Calculus sequence. Please consult also the听Mathematics major area听of this website under the College of Arts and Science.

You are exempted from the CSOM Calculus requirement if you received a score of 4 or higher on either the Calculus AB or Calculus 糖心vlog直播平台 placement exam, and the result has been recorded on your transcript.

Otherwise, students in CSOM usually complete their Calculus requirement by taking either听MT100听Calculus I or听MT101听Calculus II in theirfreshman year. It doesn't matter in which semester you take one of these courses.

Note

  • Students with little or no Calculus background should take听MT100听Calculus I to satisfy their Calculus requirement.
  • Students who successfully completed a year of a "Calculus AB" curriculum, but do not have AP Calculus credit, should consider enrolling directly in听MT101听Calculus II.
  • Beginning with Summer Orientation Session #5, some or all sections of MT100 may be closed to CSOM students, given seating limits and the need to enroll all science students who are required to take two semesters of Calculus in their first year. If such restrictions are in place when you register, plan on completing your Calculus requirement in the Spring, and consider taking either EC151 or CS021 in the Fall semester.
  • Be sure to complete your听CSOM Statistics requirement听in your freshman year (usually by taking EC151 or by having AP credit in Statistics). If you do have to take Calculus, take Statistics in whichever semester you don't take Calculus, and vice-versa (neither course is dependent upon the other).
  • If you are considering an听A&S major in Math, you should speak directly with the Mathematics听Undergraduate Vice Chairabout moving into the Math & Science Major Calculus sequence (MT102听-听MT103/MT105听-听MT202), instead of enrolling in one of the MT100 or MT101 courses or opting out of Calculus with your AP credit. Please consult also the听Mathematics major areaof this website under the College of Arts and Sciences.

You are exempted from the CSOM Statistics requirement if you obtained a score of 5 on the AP Statistics exam and the result has been recorded on your transcript.

Otherwise, you should plan on taking EC151 Statistics in either the first or second semester of your freshman year.

Note

  • All questions regarding alternative substitutions of coursework for the Statistics requirement should be referred to the听Economics Department, located on the fourth floor of 21 Campanella Way.

MT235 Math for Management Science

Note: MT235 is no longer offered by the Mathematics Department.听 Math for Management Science is now listed as MD235 and is offered by the Department of Operations and Strategic Management in the Carroll School of Management.
