Clara Sandler, a native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, feels at home in a wide range of styles, from opera, oratorio and recitals, to zarzuela and tango. Critics have praised her singing as 鈥渂oth powerful and gentle, capturing a remarkable range of emotions鈥�, her voice possessing 鈥渁 radiantly rich and mellow tone quality鈥�. Ms. Sandler appeared as the featured soloist at the Boston premiere of Gorecki鈥檚 鈥淪ymphony of Sorrowful Songs鈥�, with the Boston Chamber Ensemble. With this orchestra she also performed Wagner鈥檚 鈥淲esendonck Lieder鈥�, her singing praised by The Boston Globe for her 鈥渄ark and attractive timbre鈥�.
Some of her operatic roles include Oscar (鈥淯n ballo in maschera鈥�), Nella (鈥淕ianni Schicchi鈥�, named 鈥淏est Opera鈥� in 1999 by The Boston Globe), Yum-Yum (鈥淭he Mikado鈥�), Elsie Maynard (鈥淵eomen of the Guard鈥�), performed with the Boston Academy of Music, and Papagena (鈥淢agic Flute鈥�) with the New Bedford Symphony. She appeared in the world premiere of Daniel Pinkham鈥檚 opera 鈥淭he Cask of Amontillado鈥� with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project. Her oratorio credits include the soprano solos in Haydn鈥檚 鈥淭he Creation鈥� and 鈥淗armoniemesse鈥�, Schubert鈥檚 鈥淢irjams Siegesgesang鈥�, Bizet鈥檚 鈥淭e Deum鈥�, Mendelssohn鈥檚 鈥淓lijah鈥�, Mozart鈥檚 鈥淩equiem鈥� and 鈥淐oronation Mass鈥�, Bach鈥檚 鈥淢agnificat鈥� and 鈥淐antata #80鈥�, and Handel鈥檚 鈥淢essiah鈥�, among others.
An avid researcher of music from Spain and Latin America, Ms. Sandler has presented many recitals in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, Uruguay and in her native Buenos Aires. She is a member of the Boston Arts Consort, which performs music from Spain in the New England area.
Ms. Sandler, a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music, is on its Voice faculty at the Preparatory & Continuing Education Schools as well as at Boston College鈥檚 Music Department. Her CD 鈥�Alma Apasionada, Songs from Spain and Argentina鈥�, was released in 2006 by Newport Classic. She is a certified teacher of the Alexander Technique and trained under Tommy Thompson at the Alexander Technique Center at Cambridge.
