As a youth, rising senior Jinoo Song discovered his passion for writing. When he arrived at Boston College from his Clifton, NJ, hometown, he joined The Gavel as an editorial assistant. Now, as managing editor, he mentors freshman writers and writes and inspires pieces that he says empower Asian American and other students.
Song is the 2019 winner of the Benigno and Corazon Aquino Scholarship, awarded each spring to a junior with a strong academic record, active engagement in Asian American issues, and service both on and off campus to the Asian American community.聽
A Carroll School of Management student with concentrations in accounting and information systems, and a second major in sociology, Song said the Aquino Scholarship validates his campus pursuits, which include membership on the FACES Council.
The scholarship committee 鈥渞ecognized my writing, story, and dreams as important. To be the 2019 Aquino Scholar means to me that I need to sustain and grow upon the work that I鈥檓 doing, even after I graduate. I hope to use writing as a way to flesh out and validate the lived experiences of all marginalized people, as a way to facilitate healing and allyship.鈥
